Frieze Block

MS. 2. yüzyıl

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

In ancient architecture, the frieze block is one of the sections of the entablature carried by the columns and is located between the architrave and cornice. This example is dated to the 2nd century and features an upper molding with a deeply engraved ion-kyma border. In the middle of the frieze belt are broad acanthus motifs, with their ends open on both sides, which are connected to other acanthus motifs that draw sequentially circular lines towards the corners. There are floral motifs in the inner parts of these leaves, and ion-kyma and astragal borders under the middle belt, respectively.
