Composite Column Capital

MS 4. yüzyıl sonu - MS 5. yüzyıl başı

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The column capital, decorated on the surface of the kalathos with two rows of acanthus motifs, is dated to the late 4th-early 5th centuries. The longest of the leaves with five sections and three points are in the middle section. The curved tips of these leaves touch the ones on the sides of the capital. The leaves on the top row support the symmetrical volutes and there is a space between them, and the echinus section of the capital. The echinus section bears an astragal on the bottom, and an ion kyma sequence on the top. Half palmettes emerging from the volutes extend over the ion-kyma. The surface of the abacus section is decorated with laurel leaf motifs.
