Imperial edict

Safer başı 1112 / Temmuz ortaları 1700

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

This ferman was drawn up in Istanbul. The monogram of the tuğra of Sultan Mustafa II affixed to the document reads, ‘Şah Mustafa b. Mehmed Han may he ever be victorious’. The edict concerns a bakery that is an endowment of Aziz Mahmud Hüdai dervish lodge in Üsküdar, Istanbul. It explains that because the bakery is small and lacks its own flourmill, its revenues have diminished. The edict commands that the necessary improvements be made and that management of the bakery be placed in the hands of the şeyh of the lodge, Abdülhay Efendi (d. 1705). The gold tuğra is illuminated. To the upper left of the tuğra are the words ‘Let the necessary action be taken’ in the sultan’s own handwriting set inside an illuminated panel.
