It was customary in dervish lodges to hang illuminated panels inscribed with the name of the founder of the order on the walls. The calligrapher Rakım has designed this interesting example, consisting of the words, ‘Friend, O the Lord Mevlana Muhammed Celaleddin-i Rumî’ arranged inside a Mevlevi cap set on a low table with tassels hanging down on each side and curved feet decorated with saz leaves. On the table are the words, Kaddese’llahu sirrahu’l-‘âlî (May God render his exalted secret holy) and below this is the calligrapher’s colophon: Ketebehu türâbu akdâmi’s-sâlikîne Râkım el-muhibbu li ehli’l-yakîn. Gufira zunûbuhu (Written by Rakım, who loves the earth beneath the feet of sufis and those who possess wisdom. May God forgive his sins). These lines are enclosed in cloud cartouches (beyne’s-sütur). The cream ground is decorated with gold flowering branches, and on either side of the headdress are long leafy sprigs with small pink flowers. Above the headdress hang tassels that appear to belong to a curtain. In the upper corners are scrolling motifs. The inscription is framed by gold ruled borders, a narrow dark red border, outside which is a blue border with halkâr decoration. The outermost black border is decorated with scrolling gold saz leaves and flowers, with star-like flowers in the corners.
