Mahmud Celaleddin was one of the famous 19th century calligraphers who specialised in the magnified celi sülüs script. He was one of the rare self-taught calligraphers who trained himself by copying the writing of earlier famous masters, and developed his own style. For this calligraphic panel (levha) consisting of four lines of Arabic verse, the calligrapher has first prepared a stencil, which he has used to write in gold ink. The colophon reads, ‘In all my tasks I place my trust in God. I make my entreaty in honour of five people, Muhammad, his two grandsons (Hasan and Hüseyin), then Fatıma and Ali. Written by Mahmud Celaleddin in 1215’. Gilded ruled borders frame the writing and each of the lines. The gilded halkâr decoration in the outer border dates from the 20th century.
