Album of calligraphic exercises

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The album (murakka) contains exercises in talik script of the type called müfredat meşki, used for teaching combined forms of characters. The album ends with a Persian couplet reading, ‘So now you have passed the stage of single characters / The time has come to practise them combined’. The exercises are deliberately written in watery ink so as to reveal the movements of the pen and flow of the ink. As was customary for such exercises the word sa’y (work) is written between the lines. The exercises are written on cream coloured paper and the margins are decorated with vassale collage in thick blue and pink paper. There is no colophon. However, another calligrapher has added an attribution in Arabic at the end of the final kıt’a: ‘the humble Mehmed Es’ad el-Yesarî, may God forgive his sins’.
