Koran

The illuminated opening spread (ff.1r-2v) of the Koran is similar to that of other Korans  copied in Shumen. The broad lobed border contains oval cartouches with gold and lapis blue grounds,  encircled by saz leaves. The field of the border is filled with closely packed tiny pink and blue buds. The  Fatiha surah and first four verses of the Bakara surah are set inside narrow, oval lobed medallions that are  globular at the centre. The verses are arranged so that they are not divided between pages. The colophon  is encircled by oval lobed medallions, with large pink flowers on a blue ground in the cornerpieces. There  is gilded halkâr illumination in the margins (ff. 307r-308v). The surah headings and margins are decorated  with rose motifs. The chestnut coloured leather binding with flap has lozenge-shaped gilded motifs on  the covers. The doublures are lined with paper.
