Calligraphic panel with gold lettering

1261 / 1845

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The three-line inscription on the levha exhibited here is a hadith reading, ‘The sultan is the shadow of God on earth. Whosoever makes him a gift God will repay with gifts. Whosoever scorns him shall be scorned by God.’ The gold lettering has been prepared using a template on thick glossy dark blue paper. The first line is longer than the two following lines, which are flanked by rectangular cartouches divided into three. Inside the right-hand cartouche is written, ‘Thus declared the Prophet of God –may God surround him with His compassion.’ In the left-hand cartouche is the calligrapher’s colophon: ketebehu Yesârî-zâde Mustafa İzzet ğufira lehumâ 1261 (Written by Yesarizade Mustafa İzzet in the year 1261. May God forgive his sins). The border is filled with gilded leaf motifs with stars at the corners.
