Calligraphic panel with gilded lettering

1318 / 1900

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The calligraphy has been executed using a stencil written by Sami Efendi. The inscription in gold ink on a brown ground reads, Allâhu veliyyu’t-tevfîk (Success is owing to God). Above the extended letter ya in the centre is an inscription reading Ni’me’l-mevlâ and ni’me’r-rafîk (What a sublime Lord and excellent friend), in an istif composition with the letters arranged one above the other.1 The colophon reads, ‘Written by Sami, (1) 318’. The writing is framed by a gold-ruled border and the broad outer border is filled with gilded intertwining geometric decoration that is probably the work of the famous illuminator Bahaddin Tokatlıoğlu (d. 1939). Calligraphic panels for hanging on walls were produced by illuminators using templates written by calligraphers in large celi scripts. The calligrapher Sami Efendi’s compositions were usually produced by Tokatlıoğlu.
